Have you turned on the news lately and just felt … ugh? Or have you binged a podcast series that got you so worked up about what’s going on in the world, that you couldn’t sleep?

Welcome to 2020. It’s been a year, to say the least, and news and social media feeds seem to be getting worse and worse. But for some reason, most of us can’t look away.

If you’ve caught yourself going down the media rabbit hole lately, it’s time to start paying attention to your attention.

Your goal: Cut back your news and social media to once or twice a day — whether that’s with a morning email newsletter, radio show, or podcast that gives you the day’s headlines. Then, move on with your life. Read fiction. Take a bath. Practice yoga. Go for a walk in nature. Fill your sacred free moments with things that bring your mind peace and joy — not all-consuming stress.

Still find yourself tuning in? You may need to …

  1. 1.Unsubscribe from breaking news email blasts that flood your inbox.
  2. If news alerts pop up on your phone’s home screen, adjust your settings so you don’t see them anymore.
  3. Delete social media apps that aren’t serving you. (You can always re-download them later.)
  4. Come up with a mantra or phrase you can tell yourself when you get the urge for a news update. It could be something like, “Will this make me happy right now? I choose to spend my free time focusing on what brings me joy.”

While yes, it’s important to be informed and in the know, we all need a healthy balance. You’ll not only feel better yourself, but you might even be able to help out friends who are having a hard time right now.

We only have so many hours in a day. Here’s to paying attention to your attention!

Have a wonderful weekend!
