We have a hunch you would do anything for your friends. After all, a good friend is priceless! Friendships are what bring us joy in the good times and comfort in the bad.
And as much as we need “our people” for community and connection, we also need to find friendship from within — because you’re with you from beginning to end and you’re the one person who will always be there, no matter what.
It’s easy to fall out of touch with the friendship you have with yourself. Maybe you’ve gotten into the bad habit of letting negative self-talk fill your mind with criticisms you’d never dare even whisper to a friend. Or perhaps you’ve been so busy taking care of others that you’re feeling a little disconnected to Y-O-U.
If deep down you know it’s time to renew your friendship with your wonderful self, schedule time in your calendar to …
Go on a coffee, lunch, or dinner date … with yourself. Use this solo time to be present in the moment, read, or journal. Keep your phone tucked away and relish the time to be alone with your thoughts.
Take a class. Doing something new or different shakes things up and helps us connect with ourselves on a fresher level. Hop on a pottery wheel, strum on a guitar, or sign up for a dance class. You’ll get to spend quality time with yourself, and may even learn a new skill while you’re at it.
Have a heart-to-heart with yourself, and rediscover what you want in life. What’s been on your mind lately? Anything specific weighing you down? Give yourself space to unpack any emotional baggage and tune into your intuition for the answers. Often just saying things out loud or writing thoughts down makes us feel better.
Next, take a moment to consider five things you’d like to experience this summer. Do you want to travel, slow down or practice more self-care? Take this time to reflect and connect with your hopes, dreams and vision for your future.
Talk kindly to yourself. It’s time to start treating yourself the same way you treat your best friends. So give yourself compliments, be encouraging and let the little mistakes and shoulda, woulda, coulda’s go. If you find it challenging, you’ll want to read this!
Life is wild, but it’s comforting to know you’ll always have one special person by your side: Y-O-U. So give yourself a break, be kinder and do what you can to foster the friendship you have with yourself. Life is so much better when you know you have your own back. 🙂
Be good to yourself this weekend!
