We don’t have to tell you this, but life is pretty much up in the air right now … for all of us.
No one knows when work will start again, when your kids will go back to school, when you can go on vacation or gather together with friends for celebrations.
No one knows when life will feel normal again.
If living with more questions than answers makes you feel uneasy, you’re not alone. All the wondering and wishing for something definitive can drive you crazy, and leave you stressed, depressed or worried sick. And that’s not what any of us want!
So how can you feel better during such uncertain times?
To feel even a tiny bit better, try to make peace with uncertainty. Yes, this is easier said than done, but go with us …
When outside forces are out of your control, the best you can do is shift your focus to control your own personal self, including your emotions.
Many of us are control freaks (or recovering!) and everyone loves to feel a sense of power over their lives. No matter what’s going on around you, you can control how much news and social media you consume, and whether you spend your weekends reading good books or listening to scary podcasts.
You also get to decide which thoughts you’ll entertain and which you’ll let pass.
Having a mantra or a serenity prayer in your back pocket is a necessity during uncertain times, too. Whenever you start asking yourself a question, like, “When will I …” or “What’s going to happen if …” and you find yourself feeling scared, sad or overwhelmed repeat a mantra like:
Everything will be OK. Everything will work out.
I am not alone. We are all in this moment of uncertainty together.
I will be at peace with what I cannot control, and find joy in my day-to-day.
Things are changing every day, and I have to trust that things will be OK.
This is not an easy time and you’re allowed to feel all you’re feeling. Go easy on yourself and try to make peace with the uncertainty you feel. Meditation always helps too.
When you stop trying to control the things you can’t, you’ll breathe a sigh of relief. Then as if by magic, your mind will stop racing, your heart will stop pounding and you’ll finally get a good night’s sleep — which you deserve!
To feeling peace today,
XO
